Shortly after 20:00 (8 pm) yesterday evening a serious road accident took place on the Ring Road outside the village Vík in South Iceland. The driver of a passenger vehicle carrying three people lost control of the car, causing the vehicle to roll over several times before coming to a stop on the side of the road.
Victim was airlifted to Reykjavík
All three people who were in the car were injured, but only the driver suffered critical injuries. A rescue helicopter from the Icelandic Coast Guard was dispatched to airlift the driver to the National University Hospital in Reykjavík, while an ambulance took the two passengers to Reykjavík. The driver was pronounced dead at the hospital last night.
The accident took place on the Ring Road where it crosses Kötlugarður, a several meter high flood barrier constructed to protect Vík from a glacial outburst flood from Mýrdalsjökull glacier. According to the Police in South Iceland all three people were wearing seatbelts. No further information has been made public about the crash.
The identity of the people, their age or nationality have not been made public.
