The travellers who died in a fatal head-on collision on the Golden Circle yesterday afternoon were from the Netherlands. The people, a man born in 1992 and a woman born in 1995 were driving a small camper van. According to the Police in South Iceland they appear to have been driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident took place. The vehicle crashed head on into a dump truck which was coming from the opposite direction.
Tragic accident on the Golden Circle
The people were driving west, toward Þingvellir National Park and Reykjavík, along the road across Lyngdalsheiði heath when the accident took place. Lyngdalsheiði heath separates Þingvellir National Park and the South Iceland plain. It is part of the Golden Circle, the most popular day tour from Reykjavík.

The Police in South Iceland are investigating the cause of the accident. According to a statement from the Police conditions on the road were good when the accident took place. There was neither rain nor any wind to speak of, the road was clear, with no snow or ice, and visibility was ideal. Among the issues which need to be investigated are the speed of the vehicles and the condition of both cars. A chief superintendent for the Police in South Iceland told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that the Police has been unable to determine why the young couple were on the wrong side of the road when the accident took place.
The driver and a passenger in the dump truck, both local males, suffered minor injuries in the collision.
The family of the young people have been contacted through the Dutch authorities.
