Fatal accident in slopes of Mt. Kirkjufell: Foreign traveler fell to his death in sheer cliffs 8432

A foreign hiker fell to his death in Mt. Kirkjufell earlier today. The man was hiking with at least one other hiker when the accident happened. The nationality or age of the man have not been made public.

According to the Police in West Iceland the accident took place shortly after ten in the morning. According to initial reports the man had been hiking with a group when he fell down sheer cliffs in the mountain side, but according to the latest statement from the Police the man was climbing the mountain with a second man when the two lost sight of each other. The man died after falling down steep cliffs.

Paramedics and Police had arrived at the foothills of the mountain shortly after 11:00, while members of a specialized mountain rescue ICE-SAR battalion arrived at the site with an Coast Guard helicopter at noon. Due to difficult conditions and strong winds in the mountain sides the helicopter could not reach the site where the accident took place. Members of ICE-SAR carried the man down the steep mountain. 

The accident is being investigated by the Police in West Iceland.

This is the second fatal hiking accident in the slopes of Mt. Kirjufell in little more than a year. In July 2017 a 43 year old Polish woman fell to her death in steep cliffs in the western slopes of the mountain.
