Farmer Guðbergur Egill Eyjólfsson found a short-eared owl inside his barn yesterday. Guðbergur Egill lives on the farms Brúnagerði in Fnjóskadalur valley, located 10 kilometres northeast of Akureyri.
“Part of the roof blew off the barn some days ago during a storm. I suspect the owl got in through the opening and can’t find the way out. I’ve opened the barn-doors now, hopefully it will leave the premises tonight,” the farmer told news website Vísir.
The short-eared owl is the most common type of owl found in Iceland. It’s a medium-sized owl, measuring around 34-43 cm (13-17 in) in length. The second most common owl is the long-eared owl. The rarest owl found in Iceland is the snowy owl, their numbers are unknown.
