Nearly 8 in 10 Icelandic businesses make use of social media, data from Statistics Iceland reveals. On average 47% of European businesses used social media, compared to 79% in Iceland. Malta comes in second place with 74%, followed by Norway (72%) and Denmark (68%).

The statistics reveal a rapid development in the use of social media and telecommunications technology by Icelandic businesses in recent years. In 2013 59% of Icelandic companies used social networks, compared to 77% in 2017. At the same time the share of businesses with their own websites has not changed much. In 2010 80% of Icelandic businesses say they had their own website, compared to 82% in 2017.
Facebook appears to be the dominant form of social networking used by Icelandic companies, as 16% say they use microblogs like Twitter and 17% say they use multimedia sharing websites like Instagram and YouTube.
The EU average for businesses who use social media is 47%. All five Nordic countries are represented in the top 10. In addition to Iceland, Norway and Denmark, Sweden comes in 8th with 65% of businesses using Social media. Finland is in the 10th spot with 63% of businesses using social media. The UK is in 9th place with 63% of companies using social media.
Polish companies are least likely to use social media. Only 27% of Polish businesses are represented on some social media platform.
