Friday night looks like it is going to be offering ideal conditions for visitors hoping to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights during their stay in Iceland. According to the aurora forecast of the Icelandic Meteorological office the activity of the Aurora on Friday night is expected to be 4, which can generate a spectacular show. What is especially promising, though, is that most parts of Iceland are expected to have clear skies on Friday, making it that much easier to see one of nature's most spectacular shows.
IMO builds its forecast on combined information on aurora activity, cloud cover, sunlight and moonlight. The activity for the Aurora on Friday is four on a scale of 1-9. IMO explains that grade 2 (low activity) can be beautiful and grade 3 (moderate) can be dazzling. Grade 4 (active) can be spectacular.

Tonight and tomorrow the activity is expected to remain high (4, active), but will have dropped (2, low) by Saturday. Tonight the aurora will most likely only be visible in East Iceland and parts of the north, and along the northern coast of the Westfjords. For travellers staying in Reykjavík and the South and West Iceland the heavy cloud cover will almost certainly make the active aurora impossible to see. But, if there is a break in the clouds and the clear skies manage to peek through, the Aurora might just possibly greet lucky onlookers.
Tomorrow, Friday, things are looking far better: The combination of high activity and clear skies all over Iceland make for ideal conditions for viewing the Northern lights.
But: Remember to dress warmly! Freezing temperatures and combined with light to moderate breeze are expected tomorrow night. Remember to check the weather forecast before heading out!
