Tourism has become a valuable source of foreign exchange for Iceland and according to new data from Íslandsbanki bank the export value of tourism in Iceland in 2015 is estimated to be around 342 billion krónur (227,242,524 euros/259,051,658 US dollars).
Tourism in Iceland has risen steadily over the past decade and the Icelandic Travel Industry Association, Samtök ferðaþjónustunnar, expects the number of tourists visiting Iceland to increase by 15 percent in 2015. Over the past years, the number has increased by 20 percent annually.

According to Morgunblaðið the total export value of the tourism sector in 2015 is expected to exceed that of the fishing industry by 62 billion krónur (411,960,133 euros/ 469,412,477 US dollars).
The tourism sector became Iceland’s largest export industry in 2013.

Should the tourism industry continue to grow as it has done over the past years, its total revenue will reach a similar amount as the country’s total expenditures, which amounted to 640 billion krónur (425,249,169 eruos/ 484,554,815 US dollars) this year.
