Explosion in the number of foreign travellers in November: 61.4% more than 2015 906

The increase in the number of foreign travellers visiting Iceland in November was 61.4%, compared to November 2015, the Icelandic Tourist Board reports. In November 2016 132,000 foreign travellers visited Iceland, which was a 50,000 increase over the same month in 2015, when the number was 82,000. The largest groups of visitors came from the US (23,3%) and the UK (27,8%).

The number of foreign visitors has grown sixfold since 2010. During the first 11 months of 2015 37.9% more travellers visited Iceland than during the first 11 months of 2015. In the past few years this growth in tourism has been moving into the off-season months, resulting in an extension of the tourism season in Iceland. 

The number of foreign visitors is based on counts of foreign travellers who pass through the Keflavík national airport, the only international airport in Iceland.
