Ever wondered what Iceland looked like before there were any foreign travellers in Iceland? Now you can get a small glimpse, or a taste, of Iceland around the middle of the 20th Century.
During the first two weekends of October the Edinborg Cultural Centre in the town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords will be offering a 1965 themed dinner theatre, complete with what a menu featuring what was the pinnacle of culinary achievement in Iceland half a century ago. During dinner the local theatre group “The Little theatre group” will perform pieces from selected theatre productions of the past 50 years, as well as performing some of the most popular songs of the time.
A standard Icelandic sunday dinner à la 1965
The menu is a standard Icelandic retro feast, something almost every Icelanders can attest to having been a standard sunday dinner at his grandparents’ house. According to the Facebook page of the Little Theatre group the entrée is “shrimp cocktail”, made with plenty of mayonnaise and northern prawn, the tiny little Atlantic shrimp caught in Icelandic waters. The main course is leg of lamb, with “appropriate condiments”, which can only mean a rich cream gravy, potatoes, canned green peas, canned red cabbage and perhaps rhubarb jam, and for dessert guests are offered ice cream with canned cocktail fruit.
The retro-nights will be offered on Friday and Saturday October 2 and 3, as well as October 9 and 10. Tickets cost 5,000 and reservations can be made by email [email protected]
