The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority advices drivers to look out for ice and snow on roads today, especially in the north and at higher elevations. Travelers are asked to show extra caution on the Ring Road where it passes over heaths or through mountain passes.

The IRCA warns of icy patches on the Ring Road in South West Iceland, on Þingvallavegur road in Þingvellir National Park and on the Ring Road over Hellisheiði heath, which separates South West and South Iceland. Drivers are also warned to expect snow on the Ring Road on Holtavörðuheiði heath, which separates West and North Iceland.

In North and East Iceland people should expect snow and icy roads at all higher elevations, heaths and mountain passes. Most all roads leading into the Central Highlands are impassable and will not re-open until next summer.

Now that winter has arrived travelers should always keep up to date with weather alerts and the forecast on vedur.is, any travel warnings at safetravel.is and road conditions on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority.
