Expect serious traffic delays in Reykjavík due to roadwork at two major arteries 6457

Motorists can expect serious traffic delays in Reykjavík for the entire summer due to extensive roadwork on Miklabraut, one of two main arteries out of downtown Reykjavík.

Delays heading in and out of downtown
Reykjavík city and the Road Authority have closed a several blocks long stretch of the street running along Klambratún park, just east of the old part of town, is being renewed to add new bike-lanes, a public transit lane, improved access for pedestrians as well as noise barriers. The work is expected to last until the end of August. In the meantime the number of lanes on Miklabraut will be reduced from four to three, then to just two, causing significant delays to traffic.

If you need to travel in and out of downtown Reykjavík you might consider finding an alternative route: The highway which runs along the north coast (Sundabraut) or Laugavegur/Suðurlandsbraut which runs between the two major arteries are options. (see map below)

The road work around the construction sites at the eastern edge of the old harbour in downtown Reykjavík is also expected to cause continuing delays.

On May 20 a second street in downtown will be closed, Geirsgata. The street will remain closed for at least two weeks, according to the local news site Vísir. With Geirsgata closed traffic from downtown Reykjavík to the north coast of the city and Sæbraut, one of the two arteries out of the city will be facing significant delays and difficulty.

Motorists are advised that most gps equipment is not automatically updated to take this work into account. Drivers should therefore check the map BEFORE driving off to ensure they have a sense of the street layout. Remember that the high number of one-way streets in downtown Reykjavík can cause problems for people inexperienced with downtown Reykjavík.

The schedule of road work on Miklabraut is as follows:

In May one of the two westbound lanes will be closed, slowing traffic heading into downtown.

In June one of the eastbound lanes will also be closed, causing serious delays to all traffic.

In August both westbound lanes will be open, but the eastbound lane will remain closed until the end of the month.

You can see the two stretches of street affected by the road work in the map below (red) and the two alternative routes out of downtown Reykjavík (blue).
