Visitors planning on travel in West or South Iceland today take note: A Yellow Weather Alert has been issued for the region around Faxaflói bay, including Snæfellsnes and Reykjanes peninsulas and the west coast, as well as all of South Iceland. Severe gale can create dangerous driving conditions near mountains.
The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a Yellow Weather alert, effective from 6:00 today until noon for the Faxaflói bay area, and until 7:00 tomorrow morning, Tuesday, for South Iceland.
The areas in question include many popular tourist destinations, including the Golden Circle as well as the Black Sand Beaches on the South Coast, and Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.
The IMO warns that a southeasterly gale, 15-25 m/s (33-56 mph) in West and South Iceland. The winds in West Iceland will be strongest around Kjalarnes and Hafnarfjall as well as Reykjanesbraut, and along Eyjafjöll mountains in South Iceland. Localized winds along these mountains can easily reach much greater force, and can cause drivers to lose control of their vehicles.

A travel alert has been issued for south and west Iceland, asking travelers to take care and slow down.
Strong wind today south and west Iceland!Strong wind with violent wind gusts (up to 35 m/s / 78 mph / 126 km/h) and limited visibility due to sleet or rain expected today (Monday) between Reykjavík and Borgarnes, Reykjavík and Jökulsárlón (Glacier Lagoon), Reykjavík and Keflavík and on the Golden Circle. Use caution!
Travelers should remember keep two things in mind:
1) Expect powerful windgusts when driving near steep mountain sides. Individual gusts can easily reach hurricane force, causing drivers to lose control of their vehicles or blowing cars off the road. The Ring Road runs close to numerous steep mountains where such windgusts form.
2) Driving conditions become progressively more difficult at higher altitudes. The Ring Road crosses several mountain passes and heaths where driving conditions can deteriorate rapidly.
