Expect parts of Ring Road to remain closed today 7402

Travellers are urged to reconsider any travel plans in North, South and South East Iceland. Orange or yellow weather alerts are in effect for these areas. Parts of the Ring Road in West, North and South Iceland could be closed due to the weather. Most of the Ring Road in South-East Iceland has already been closed and will likely remain closed until this afternoon.

The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration has closed the Ring Road across Skeiðarársandur glacial outwash plain in South East Iceland. The Ring Road between Lómagnúpur mountain, east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur village and Skaftafell visitor center in Vatnajökull National Park is closed to all traffic due to hurricane force winds and a sandstorm.

The IRCA warns that driving conditions between Seljalandsfoss waterfall and the village of Höfn are extremely dangerous. 

In East Iceland the Ring Road between Þvottá rive and the village Djúpivogur has been closed due to storm and dangerous driving conditions. The Ring Road between East and North Iceland across Mývatns- og Möðrudalsöræfi highland plateau has also been closed to all traffic. A serious traffic accident took place yesterday afternoon near Víðidalur on the southern edge of the plateau when a bus carrying 25 travellers crashed into a snowplow. 

Visibility on roads in the northern part of Iceland will be less than 100 m (330 ft).

As the storm picks up in the north in the afternoon it is likely that some mountain passes and heaths will be closed to traffic. The Ring Road across Holtavörðuheiði heath, which seperates West and North Iceland, will likely be closed this afternoon.

The weather is not expected to improve until Saturday.

Travellers are asked to study the weather forecast as well as updated weather alerts and road conditions carefully before embarking on any trips today.
