Yesterday marked the 9 month anniversary of the Icelandic upset victory over England in the EURO 2016. By beating England 2-1, Iceland advanced to the quarter finals. Goals from Ragnar Sigurðsson and Kolbeinn Sigþórsson guaranteed the sweetest Icelandic victory in over the English since the Royal Navy was chased out of Icelandic waters in the Cod Wars of the 20th century.

And judging by the busy schedule at the maternity ward of the National University Hospital, now 9 months later, Icelanders decided the victory over the English proved the world needed more Icelanders!
Yesterday Ásgeir Pétur, the doctor on call at the maternity ward over the weekend, posted the following to Twitter:

we set a record in the number of epidural anesthesia at the maternity ward this past weekend – nine months after the 2-1 victory over England

Almost 10% of the Icelandic nation flew to France to support their national football team, and Icelanders pushed back wedding dates to be able to attend the tournament.
