The Estonian airline Estonian Air will commence direct flights between Copenhagen and the town of Akureyri in Northern Iceland in May 2016. The flights will be once weekly on Saturdays, until September 24.

According to an announcement on the web page of Akureyri municipality the route will be served with 84 seat Bombardier CRJ 900 aircraft. The flights will be part of the service network of Estonian Air, but according to the announcement on the web page of Akureyri a local travel agency, Trans-Atlantic, will handle ticket sales. Ómar Banine, the manager of Trans-Atlantic tells the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service the agency has guaranteed Estonian Air a certain number of ticket sales on each flight. If the experiment is successful the service will be expanded.

Icelandic authorities have been searching for ways to increase international service to smaller airports around Iceland to help spread the growing tourism more evenly across the island. A government commission has been looking into increasing service to Akureyri and Egilsstaðir airports. Recently Discover the World, one of UK’s leading specialist tour operators, announced it will be offering direct flights between London and Egilsstaðir in Eastern Iceland.
