President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson announced on New Year’s Day that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming presidential elections.
Ólafur Ragnar is Iceland’s longest serving president, having been in office for 20 years. According to the National Broadcasting Service, an estimated 40 percent of voters will never have experienced a presidential election without Ólafur Ragnar seeking re-election.
During the 2012 presidential election, Ólafur Ragnar had initially stated he would not seek re-election, but after receiving a petition of over 30,000 voters in favour of his candidacy he decided to run for a fifth term.

A number of presidential candidates have announced their candidacy, among them are authors Þorgrímur Þráinsson and Elísabet Jökulsdóttir, folklorist Hildur Þórðardóttir, and Youtube blogger Ari Jósepsson.
The National Broadcasting Service asked people on the street who they would vote for in the upcoming elections and few seem to have made up their mind.
Jón Bergmundsson: “I haven’t put much thought into it. I’m waiting for more candidates to announce their candidacy. Over the years I’ve given my vote to a number of different people.”
Arnhildur Karlsdóttir: “I haven’t made up my mind. But I’m glad there’ll be a change this time around.”
