To celebrate Reykjavík Pride, which begins today and culminates with the Reykjavík Pride Parade on Saturday August 12, Reykjavík City has painted the sidewalk leading to City Hall in the rainbow colours. The painting was done by the mayor himself along with the organizers of Reykjavík Pride.
Painting busy thoroughfares in the rainbow colours has become an important part of Reykjavík Pride. In recent years Skólavörðustígur street, which leads up to Hallgrímskirkja church, has been painted in the rainbow colours.
Reykjavík Pride includes 30 different events, ranging from lectures and panel discussions to exhibitions, concerts, walking tours and cruises. The full programme is available at hinsegindagar.is. In recent years Reykjavík Pride has been attended by 70.000-100.000 participants.
The official song of Reykjavík Pride 2017 has also been released. The song, called Colors of the Rainbow is performed by Daníel Arnarsson. The lyrics are written by Daníel's partner Hólmar Hólm. According to the website of Reykjavík Pride the song is an ode to love and the rainbow, opening with the lines: In the beginning there was love / the only thing which could be seen / Chaos and Eros, harmony…
