Energy company wants to build an enourmous wind farm in Þjórsárdalur valley 3665

13. mar 2023 20:23

The energy and power company Landsvirkjun wants to pace 58-80 wind turbines in Búrfellslundur in Þjórsárdalur, South Iceland. The wind farms’ impact on the landscape will largely be visual, according to the Landvirkjun’s newly published report, which could affect tourism in the area.

The turbines are expected to produce 200 megawatts of power. Each tower will be around 92 metres (302 ft) tall with 115 metre-long (377 ft) turbine blades. The wind farm is expected to cover an area 40 square kilometres (15 square miles) in size – an area similar in size to Reykjavík (see image below).

Wind farms such as these are becoming an increasingly important source of renewable energy around the world. Currently, Iceland primarily relies on hydroelectric power (75,5 %) or geothermal energy (24.4%). Only Grímsey and Flatey islands are not connected to the national electricity grid and need to use diesel generators for electricity production.

Landsvirkjun’s environmental report will be open for comments for the next weeks.
