The Icelandic Meteorological Office has issued a warning of an elevated likelihood of landslides and rockslides in the Westfjords. Heavy rain which has left many mountain slopes and extremely wet. The water level in rivers and streams in the region has risen in the past couple of days.
The IMO has cautioned that the coming days will see more precipitation. By the end of the week the temperature will drop in the Westfjords, turning the rain into snow. People planning on any hiking in the Westfjords should be careful.
Unusually wet weather and heavy rains this summer are believed to have caused one of the largest landslides in recent history when a massive landslide occurred in Fagraskógarfjall in Hítardalur valley in West Iceland in July.
