A group of eighty Icelandic horses was transported overseas from Iceland to Denmark yesterday. According to the horses’ handler the animals were “cool as a cucumber” during the flight.
The animals will then be transported from Denmark onwards to their final destinations in Sweden, Norway and Germany. Over 1300 Icelandic horses were transported overseas in 2013, most of them to breeders in Germany.
Eysteinn Leifsson travelled to Denmark with the group. He describes the Icelandic horse as a calm animal by nature and as pretty good travellers.
“They are calm as cucumbers. Individual animals react differently to circumstances such as these, but in general they are pretty good travellers,” he says.
Getting the animals overseas is not a difficult task – Icelandair Cargo works closely with three local companies specializing in the transportation of horses: Export Hestar, Horse Export and Hestvit. A specialized member of staff accompanies the animals on each flight and tends to their every need.
