A sharp earthquake swarm was detected on the SW tip of Reykjanes peninsula yesterday evening shortly after 18:00. The epicanter of the quakes was approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) south of Keflavík Airport, at a significant depth of 6-7 km (3.7-4.3 mi). The most powerful tremor, a 3.2 magnitude quake, was felt at the Blue Lagoon, located 20 km (12.4 mi) east of the epicenter of the quakes.

The quakes are likely caused by the drifting of the tectonic plates, rather than any volcanic activity.

The largest quake in the swarm, a 3.2 magnitude quake was detected at 18:10, precededy by half a dozen smaller quakes in the same area. The area is known for high levels of seismic activity. According to a seismologist at the Icelandic Meteorological Office the only report of people noticing yesterday's quake came from the Blue Lagoon.
