The couple, who reside in the small village Pesse, in North Holland, decided to holiday in Iceland because they were in search ofadventure. They travelled from Keflavík International Airport to the Westfjords and from there on to North and East Iceland and eventually South Iceland.

“Henriette is pregnant so we figured this would be our last chance to do a trip like this for some time,” Arie happily explains.

The twosome had planned to hike around the Skaftafell national park on September 3 when they happenedup on a sign on the road advertising sightseeing excursions over Vatnajökull glacier. The pair decided to inquire further about the tour.

“When we arrived, the pilot told us they were about to fly over the Holuhraun eruption area. I got really excited about this and wanted to do the trip. Henriette on the other hand had some reservations about the whole thing but urged me to do the trip alone. I eventually booked a seat for one but after a discussion with three Brits, Henriette finally decided to join me because we wanted to share the experience.”

We had never seen anything like it in our life and just kept photographing and filming the event. It was just a very special moment.

The trip took the duo over the central highlands and Vatnajökull glacier before circling the eruption area, which Arie describes as an amazing experience.

“We had never seen anything like it in our life and just kept photographing and filming the event. It was just a very special moment. The following days we almost couldn’t believe that we had really done the trip and I am very proud of Henriette for going through with it despite her reservations and pregnancy.”

The couple returned to their native Holland on September 8 and began to tell family and friends their travel-story. “Many already knew we had flown over the eruption because they had seen the photos we posted on our Facebook page. They were very excited to hear about the trip and some were even inspired to go visit Iceland.”

Arie and Henriette say they enjoyed their stay in Iceland and mention the remote Westfjords as one of the trip’s highlights.

“Iceland is a beautiful country with diverse landscapes complete with waterfalls, glaciers and volcanoes. We managed to cover a lot of land during our stay and especially loved the Westfjords, Lake Mývatn and South-East Iceland. Of course we also did the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon. All in all it was a great holiday and we highly recommend a trip to Iceland to anyone who enjoys nature,” they conclude.

Arie Pater, a psychiatric nurse, and Henriette Benjamins, an account assistant, visited Iceland two weeks ago and experienced first-hand the volcanic eruption in Holuhraun, central Iceland, during their trip.
