Drive carefully! Ice and slippery patches along entire ring-road. Snow and sleet in afternoon 5515

Travellers are advised to show caution when driving today. The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority warns that there are icy patches on all major roads, including the highway connecting Reykjavík and Keflavík International Airport. The ring road in South and South-West Iceland similarly has numerous icy and very slippery patches. Some stretches are also covered in snow, making the ice and slippery patches more dangerous.

Yesterday a family of three foreign travellers were injured in an accident in South Iceland when their car rolled over. A woman, who was not wearing a seat-belt and was thrown from the vehicle, suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Reykjavík.

Conditions in West, North and East Iceland similarly warrant great caution. The only stretch of the ring-road which the IRCA reports as clear is the South coast to the river Gígjukvísl.

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office we can expect light snow showers today. The temperature should be around freezing, but will warm up slightly during the day. Cloudy, except in the East, where skies will remain clear today and tomorrow.

By the evening the snow showers will have turned into sleet in the South and South-West Iceland. Tomorrow the wind will pick up slightly, with scattered snow and sleet showers tomorrow. East Iceland will remain fair and dry today and tomorrow.

The weather will remain similar through the weekend: Temperatures at or slightly above freezing, scattered snow and sleet and light to moderate breeze: Drive carefully and dress warm!
