The dredging vessel Perlan, which sank in the old harbour two weeks ago, has been lifted from the ocean. After numerous failed attempts rescue teams succeeded late last night in re-floating the vessel the local news site visir.is reports.
The vessel sank on Monday November 2 as it lay docked by the Ægisgarður dock in the old harbour. The vessel was completely submerged within 30 minutes. Rescue teams began their attempts to raise the ship on Wednesday November 4, but repeated attempts proved unsuccessful as water kept leaking back into the ship.

Yesterday at two in the afternoon a large team of firefighters, divers and contractors launched a new attempt to raise the ship. A large crowd of onlookers gathered to watch the ship gradually emerge as water was pumped from its hull. By eight in the evening the ship had been completely lifted from the ocean.
The ship will stay moored by Ægisgarður as authorities investigate what caused the sinking in the first place.
