Dramatic increase in voter turnout among young people in Iceland 7556

13. mar 2023 20:58

Election data from Statistics Iceland shows a dramatic increase in voter turnout among young people since 2014. While just 51.9% of voters aged 18-19 participated in the 2014 municipal elections, 63.8% participated in the 2016 Presidential elections, 68.7% in the 2016 Parliamentary elections and  75.2% participated in this year's Parliamentary elections. The increase in voter turnout over the period can be observed in all age groups, but it is most pronounced among voters younger than 30.

The increase in voter turnout is especially interesting when the high frequency of elections in recent years is considered, as it disproves all talk of voter fatigue. It is also interesting in light of the unusually high number of parties and candidates who have run for office in these elections. A total of 11 political parties fielded candidates for the October 28 election, with a total of 1,244 candidates: Roughly one out of every 200 Icelanders stood for office in the October elections.

Statistics Iceland reports that the total number of voters in the October elections was 201,792 and the voting rate 81.2%.
