Dr. Tómas Guðbjartsson has been voted Man of the Year 2014 by Vísir.is readers and Bylgjan radio station listeners. In November Tómas miraculously saved a stab victim‘s life by opening up his chest and pumping his heart by hand.

The winner was announced during the radio programme Býtið this morning. During an interview with the show’s host, Tómas claimed to be ‘touched and honoured’ by the nomination.

“But one cannot forget all the doctors, nurses and other health care workers who continue to do a magnificent job every day. My team has much, if not everything, to do with my success.”

Since October, Icelandic doctors have staged a series of two-day long strikes to press for higher pay. As yet attempts to resolve the ongoing dispute have failed. A fresh wave of strikes are set to take place in new year – this time each strike will last five days.
