On Thursday city employees covered a part of the square with Astroturf to give it that proper football feeling. Benches and tables will also be put up on the square to make the square more inviting for football fans. Every single one of the 45 matches of the championship will be shown on the giant screen, making the square the perfect destination for anyone who wants to enjoy the game in great company. A press release from Visit Reykjavík explains that the city intends to do its part to make Iceland's participation in EURO 2016 is a unique occasion in Icelandic sporting history which nobody should miss:

The aim is to recreate on Ingólfstorg the atmosphere of the terraces at the football stadia in France and to add color and excitement to the city-centre experience. All the matches will be free for the public to watch in and around the square.

A spokesman for Visit Reykjavík explains Reykjavík is expecting large crowds at the square, promising a lot of activities and events in addition to the football matches themselves. There will be activities for all ages, she stresses, including face painting for the kids and a “human foosballfield”. The city has also promised to organize special events and festivities during the games played by the Icelandic national team.
