If you are in Reykjavík on Saturday be sure you don't miss the Annual Meat Soup Day! To celebrate the formal arrival of winter visitors to Skólavörðugstígur street in downtown Reykjavík will be treated to free traditional Icelandic kjötsúpa, meat soup.
First Day of Winter
The First Day of Winter (fyrsti vetrardagur) is on 21 October this year. The date is based on the Old Norse calendar, which divided the year into only two seasons, winter and summer. According to the calendar the First Day of Winter is almost always in the week of 21-27 October.
Traditional Icelandic meat soup is a hearty and popular meal, a kind of cross between stew and soup, made with mutton, and the kind of cold weather vegetables which grow in Iceland: potatoes and rutabaga, as well as rice. It‘s a dish that‘s sure to warm and comfort on a chilly winters day.
The annual Icelandic Meat Soup Day celebration is on Skólavörðustígur Street, downtown Reykjavík. This is 15th consecutive time that the day is celebrated.
Skólavörðustígur turned into Meat Soup Street
The event is organised by restaurant owners and shopkeepers in the area in collaboration with the national organizations of Icelandic sheep vegetable farmers. Guests are invited to sample the traditional Icelandic meat soup prepared by some of the best known and skilled chefs of Reykjavík.
The the first bowl of soup will be poured at 14:00 (2pm) on Saurday. A record number of restaurants participates in the celebration, offering free meat soup to anyone passing by. In addition to the soup local artists and entertainers will entertain guests. The formal program will have finished by 16:00 (4 pm) – just in time for happy hour to begin at downtown bars.
A total of 1,500 liters of soup will be served at nine different soup stations along the street, beginning at Hallgrímskirkja church, all the way to the intersection of Skólavörðustígur and Laugavegur streets.
