Doctors and nurses at Landspítali National University Hospital miraculously saved a man’s life by opening up his chest and pumping his heart by hand. The victim, who had been stabbed through the heart, was in very critical condition when he arrived at the hospital on November 23.
Surgeons Tómas Guðbjartsson and Helgi Kjartan Sigurðsson were on back-up duty that evening and were quickly called in. Not having time to transfer the patient to the operating room, the doctors and their team began the operation as soon as the patient arrived and made do with the equipment at hand. In an amazing video from the operation viewers can hear Tómas saying: “We have located the hole in the heart. The heart is now working again. We are going to save this man!” (on the 8.50 minute mark).
Equally miraculous is the quick recovery of the victim, Sebastian Andrzej Golab, who has been discharged from hospital. He is extremely grateful to the doctors and nurses who saved his life.
“I’m speechless. I’m only a regular man but I would give them all I own, and don’t own.”
The amazing work of the hospital staff has gained much public attention because of doctor’s ongoing campaign for higher wages and improved work conditions. Large numbers of doctors have chosen to resign and search for work overseas.
