Disappointment or bullet dodged? McDonald's denies rumors it's returning to Iceland 8769

The US newspaper The New York Post claimed on Sunday that the fast food franchise McDonald's was planning to return to Iceland. These news are without any basis in fact, the local news site Vísir reports.

The New York Post story went viral in Iceland. The addition of more fast-food options led some to rejoice, but others to despair. Reykjavík is currently the only Western European capital city without a McDonald's restaurant, as Iceland is one of only a few countries in the world where the hamburger chain has no restaurants. The US based fast food franchise once operated four restaurants in Iceland, but the last of these closed its doors in 2009.

NY Post story based on rumors, speculation
The New York Post story did not cite any sources, instead basing its reporting on speculation and rumors. The local news site Vísir therefore contacted McDonald's corporate headquarters in Europe for comment or confirmation, receiving a decisive rejection of the fake news. A spokesman of McDonald's in the UK told Vísir that McDonald's has no plans to open a branch in Iceland. According to the fast-food giant Iceland does not currently meet the criteria used by the company to determine which market areas justify new marketing efforts.

This is not the first time that rumors surface about a potential McDonald's return to Iceland. In May 2017 similar stories surfaced after it surfaced that Iceland was listed among countries where the company had development plans. It seems we will have to wait a little longer for these development plans to be realized.
