One of the last mountain roads to be cleared of snow in Iceland is Mjóafjarðaheiði road leading to Mjóifjörður fjord and its tiny village. The steep gravel mountain road in East Iceland is closed for up to nine months every year. Connections between the few inhabitants and the outside world is by sea throughout the winter. However, they can start using their land vehicles later today or early tomorrow as the employees at Vegagerðin, The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, are almost through the enormous amount of snow blocking the road.
Snow walls up to 4 metres (13 f) line part of the road and are unlikely to disappear until late summer.
