The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has issued a travel advisory for today, warning that that strong winds with snowshowers and blowing snow will make driving in West and North West Iceland difficult. The wind speed is expected to remain between 13 and 18 m/s (29-40 mph) near the coast, but will reach 22 m/s (50 mph), severe gale strength on mountains and heaths.
The wind is expected to pick up during the morning and around noon. Conditions are expected to have improved by tonight.
Poor visibility, on top of icy and slick patches
As there is alot of new snow in the area which the strong winds will blow up visibility is expected to be extremely poor.
The IRCA also warns that the road connecting Reykjavík and South Iceland is very slippery due to ice. Conditions along the entire ring road are similarly difficult due to ice and slick patches. Travellers are asked to show caution.
