Roads are impassable or closed in several areas around Iceland due to the snow storm that is battering the country. Driving conditions remain difficult, roads are slippery and blowing snow is reducing visibility.
Travelling is not recommended today (Friday) in the area from Holtavörðuheiði mountain pass in the northwest, to Lake Mývatn in the northeast.

In South and Southeast Iceland extreme wind gusts, or up to 40 m/s (89 mph/144 km/h), are expected by mountains from Seljalandsfoss waterfall to the south, to Djúpivogur town in the east. Driving in this area is not recommended as extreme crosswind can easily swipe vehicles off the road.
On the southwest corner and the capital area it will be windy but dry with partly clear skies.
The Icelandic Met Office (IMO) has issued this warning: Strong gale force wind is expected in the southeast part today.

Friday: Northerly winds, 13-18 m/s (29-40 mph/47-65 km/h) today, but 18-25 m/s (40-56 mph – 65-90 km/h) in gusts in the southeast part. Frequent snow showers in the north and east parts, but sleet or rain at times during evening and night. Partly cloudy elsewhere with the odd shower of snow.
Saturday: North 10-18 m/s (22-40 mph/36-65 km/h) with snow showers in the north and east parts, but fair in the southwest. Decreasing winds and precipitation tomorrow evening. Temperature around freezing.
Sunday: Northwest 8-15 m/s (18-34 mph/29-54 km/h) and some snow showers, strongest winds by the northeast coast, lighter winds and fair in the south and west parts. Temperature -1 to -10 degrees Celsius (30-14 F), coldest inland in the northwest.
