When Icelanders voted a new president last Saturday there were names of nine candidates on the ballot. However that did not stop close to 30 die-hard fans to alter their ballots by adding the name of football manager Lars Lagerbäck and casting their vote for him as Iceland’s new president, according to local news site Vísir.

The 67-year-old Swede is hugely popular in Iceland, having taken the men’s football team to the European Finals in France (it’s first appearance at a major championship) and now all the way to the final 16.

Lagerbäck took over the Icelandic team in 2011 and has totally transformed it, bringing in fierce commitment and an ironclad defence.

Tonight’s game against England in Nice could be Lagerbäck’s last game as the manager of the Icelandic team as he will retire as the team’s manager after Euro 2016.

Of course we are hoping to see him for a few more games. That hope is not totally unfounded because while managing Sweden he built up a glorious record against England, having not lost in six encounters.

Lagerbäck’s co-manager since late 2014 is Icelander Heimir Hallgrímsson.
