Decreasing winds but snowfall expected in the north and east 4671

A strong gale hit the country yesterday with gusts of wind reaching more than 40 m/s (89 mph) at times. The weather caused some widespread disruption to transport and traffic across Holtavörðuheiði mountain road in west Iceland was restricted to convoy driving with rescue vehicles and a snowplow leading the way.

Northern regions saw heavy snowfall yesterday, with snow showers continuing today, Monday.

Brattabrekka, Laxárdalsheiði, Þröskuldar, Þverárfjall,  Mývatnsöræfi and other mountain roads in west, north and east Iceland were temporarily closed due to severe weather. The Þröskuldar road remains closed. The road between Skeiðarársandur and Jökulsárlon (southeast Iceland) is also closed to traffic. More information on road conditions is available on here.

Domestic flights are back to normal after yesterday’s storm.

Winds have been decreasing this morning in the west and north but strong gusts are to be expected along the southeast coast until noon.
