Rescue services have saved at least three vehicles out of rivers in the area surrounding Þórsmörk region since last week. Local police have issued a warning that it can be extremely dangerous when inexperienced travellers try to cross rivers such as Steinholtsá and Krossá.

During the weekend one small bus carrying 15 foreign passengers became stuck in Steinholts river on its way to Þórsmörk nature reserve. The people on the bus were rescued by a park ranger. In another incident, a Dutch couple’s car became stuck in the same river and a bus driver in the area rescued the couple.

According to Adolf Árnason, a police man at Hvolsvellir, in an interview with the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, this is a problem during the summer, since these rivers can suddenly become dangerous due to weather conditions and a sudden increase in precipitation. Furthermore, crossing rivers can be quite dangerous, especially if travellers do not have the expertise and if they are driving small, compact vehicles.
