Crime rate in capital region dropped significantly in 2016: Burglaries down by 22% 4487

The crime rate in Reykjavík dropped significantly in 2015, following an increase in the two previous years. According to preliminary figures from the Metropolitan Police (pdf) the number of crimes reported to the police in 2016 was the same as in 2012. Fewer robberies, burglaries, drugs related offences and fewer sexual offences were committed in 2016 than 2015.

The figures show that 42 robberies were committed in 2016 in the Metropolitan area, wich includes Reykjavík and the nearby suburban municipalities, and 826 burglaries. The year before saw 50 robberies and 1064 burglaries. The police received 252 reports of sexual offences, compared to 276 the year before, including a 7.7% drop in the number of reported rapes. Drugs related offences dropped by 5% compared to the year before.

Traffic violations also saw a significant drop, falling by 11% from 28,665 to 25,628.
