A Chinese man who was involved in a fatal car accident in South Iceland on December 26 has been ordered to stay in the country until April 22. The local news site visir.is reports that on Friday prosecutors filed a case in the District Court of South Iceland against the man for manslaughter through negligence. The suspect is charged with having caused the accident by reckless driving and speeding. The victim was a Japanese man. Both men were travelling with their families.
The Supreme Court had previously barred the man from leaving before March 1 while the case was under investigation. This ban has now been extended while the case is heard by the court.

The accident took place on a single-lane bridge over the river Hólá river in Öræfasveit district in South Iceland. The suspect is charged with having been speeding, driving well above the speed limit when the accident took place. The local news site visir.is reports that this is supported by photographic evidence. According to witnesses the victim was already crossing the bridge when the suspect sped onto it at high speed, leaving the other car nowhere to turn or prevent the accident.
