Júlíus Vífill Ingvarsson, councilman for the conservative Indpendence Party has resigned from his seat on the Reykjavík City Council, following revalations that in 2014 he set up a off-shore company in Panama. According to the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service RÚV, Júlíus Vífill made the announcement at the beginning of the meeting of the Reykjavík City council today. He has been a member of the Reykjavík City council for 14 years.

Dagur B. Eggertsson, the mayor of Reykjavík, said that the resignation had come as a surprise, but that that he thanked Júlíus Vífill for his service as a councilman, adding that he was taking an important step for the political culture of Iceland by shouldering responsibility for his actions by resigning.

A second councilman, Sveinbjörg Birna Sveinbjörgsdóttir, has pledged full cooperation with an internal ethics investigation whether she violated any city rules by not disclosing her ties to two off-shore companies, one in Panama and the other in Tortola. Sveinbjörg Birna, who is the representative of the centre-right Progressive party in City Council, is currently on maternity leave.
