Costco will open its doors in Iceland at 9:00 AM on Tuesday May 23. The company has postponed the opening of its Reykjavík store on numerous occasions. Now, however, the company has announced that construction of the store and preparation for its opening are far enough along to commit to an opening date.
A spokesman for Costco told the local newspaper Morgunblaðið that the company had already hired 190 people for the store. So far the company has been able to fill the positions with locals, as only one of the employees has been hired from abroad. The store manager will be a Costco veteran from the UK. The company is still hiring, however, and accepting job applications.
According to the sources of Morgunblaðið the company has seen a flood of membership applications from Icelanders, with thousands of people having applied already.
