The City Council has approved the construction which is scheduled to start next month and will be completed by June. The lighthouse will look like the two nearby lighthouses at the old harbour in downtown Reykjavík.

The lighthouse and viewing deck will be located on the ocean front in front of Höfði house. The lighthouse will provide ships visiting Reykjavík with a bettter and more secure directions to the two harbours on the northern coast of the city. The new lighthouse replaces a lighthouse on the tower of the Seamen's college which stands on a nearby hill. This lighthouse was built in 1945, but was rendered useless after new highrises were built along the shore.
