Competition to name a whale watching boat produces some hilarious suggestions 4982

It should probably not come as a surprise that North Sailing, a whale watching company in the town of Húsavík in North Iceland which appealed to the internet for help in finding a name for the latest addition to its whale watching fleet, would get flooded with entries suggesting “Boaty McBoatface” as the obvious choice. But social media has also turned up some other, hilarious and less predictable suggestions.

Several readers of Iceland Insider left suggested on our Facebook wall, ranging from Whaley McWhaleface to Reporpoised. Others suggested Walter Mitty, Mira Moby or Returned Favor. Several Twitter users had suggestiongs which made use of the Icelandic naming system, proposing names with the logical -son ending. Among these were Floaty Boatysson, Whaley Whalesson, and our favorite: Boatur Boatursson.

Gústaf Gústafsson, with North Sailing, told Iceland Insider that the company had received more than 250 entries this morning,with several names appearing more often than others. The vessel will be launched on the first of July, and North Sailing will be accepting suggestions for names until June 20: You can send in your suggestion at the website of North Sailing. The price for the best name is a trip for two to Scoresby Sound on the East coast of Greenland aboard the schooner Opal.
