Soon travellers at Keflavík airport will be able to quench their thirst with cold Icelandic tap water. Isavia, which operates the airport and the terminal, has announced it will be installing a number of drinking fountains and re-filling stations for water bottles around the terminal. Until now travellers at the airport have only been able to get cold water at dispensers in restaurants or by buying bottled water.

Recently the local newspaper Morgunblaðið drew attention to the fact that there is no way for travellers to get cold water anywhere at the terminal. There are no drinking fountains anywhere in the terminal building, and the faucets in the bathrooms are fixed to dispense only warm water. This revelation caused considerable criticism from people who felt it made little sense to force visitors to buy bottled water and not offer people tap water, considering its high quality.

Guðni Sigurðsson, a spokesman for Isavia, told Morgunblaðið that the company was responding to this attention and comments the company had received from travellers and the public. Water fountains will be added and water bottle re-filling stations. However, installing these would take time, so the airport would begin by changing several faucets in the bathrooms, thus offering travellers access to cold water at the bathrooms.
