Civil Protection in Iceland issued around noon a warning of a possible impending earthquake just outside the capital area.

Scientists have been closely monitoring increased seismic activity in the region from Krísuvík area on Reykjanes peninsula to Ölfus area in South Iceland. There is an ongoing process in the area that could develop into larger earthquake than those that have been shaken the region in the last few weeks.

Late May a size M4 earthquake struck in the area, close to lake Kleifarvatn, which is located just 22 km (13.7 mi) from Reykjavík's centre.

According to Civil Protection there are records of a size M6.5 earthquakes hitting in this region. An earthquake of that size would be keenly felt in the capital area and towns on the south coast.
