The Union of professors at state universities has reached an agreement on a new contract with the state the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports. If union members approve the contract a planned strike by professors at state universities will be cancelled.

Last week the union of professors at state universities declared its members would go on strike on December 2-18 unless an agreement was reached in their wage dispute with the state. The professors have been demanding a new contract since February. A strike by the union would mean the Christmas finals in courses taught by full professors at the University of Iceland, The University of Akureyri, The Icelandic Agricultural University and Hólar University College would be cancelled.
Late last night the negotiating team of the union and the representatives of the state reached an agreement after negotiations which had lasted eleven hours straight. The agreement will now go to a vote by union members. The results of the vote will be clear next week, at which point students will know whether finals will be held as scheduled.
