The Chinese woman who sustained critical injuries during a diving accident in Silfra fissure on Tuesday has died. The woman was 26-years-old and lived in the US.
Officials say it appears the woman experienced equipment difficulties causing her to sink 30 metres (98 ft) to the bottom of the fissure. According to the National Broadcasting Service, it took fellow divers close to five minutes to reach the woman.
The accident took place shortly after noon on Tuesday, 26 January. The woman had been scuba diving with her husband, another couple, and a licenced guide.
Following the incident, the park ranger at Þingvellir National Park told newsagent Vísir that there is great cause to impose stricter rules for diving in Silfra fissure.
