Chinese traveller involved in fatal car crash found guilty of manslaughter 4491

A 28 year old Chinese man has been sentenced to a three month suspended sentence for manslaughter by the District Court of South Iceland. The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service reports the man was also sentenced to pay the cost of the trial, 4.8 million ISK (38,000 USD/34,000 EUR). The defendant crashed head-on onto an oncoming car on a single-lane bridge in South Iceland on the second day of Christmas 2015.

The man was charged for having caused the death of the driver of the other car by speeding and driving recklessly. The other car had already entered onto the single-lane bridge when the defendant drove onto it at high speed, crashing into the oncoming car. The victim was a Japanese traveller who was visiting Iceland with his family. The defendant had been barred from leaving Iceland since the accident took place. His lawyer had initially denied the charges, but when the court began hearing his case, he confessed to having driven recklessly.
