The Supreme Court of Iceland has confirmed a travel ban preventing a foreign citizen, charged with involuntary manslaughter after a fatal car accident in Öræfasveit on 26 December, from leaving the country while the crash is under investigation.
A Japanese man died after a head on collision on a single lane bridge in Öræfasveit region in South Iceland. The man’s wife and two children were airlifted to hospital after the accident. According to witnesses the deceased’s vehicle was already on the bridge when the suspect’s car sped onto to it, leaving the deceased no room or opportunity to prevent the accident from happening.
The suspect arrived in Iceland on 22 December and was to leave on the 30th. He requested he be allowed to leave the country on bail during the investigation. The Supreme Court denied the man’s request. According to the court’s ruling the man must remain in Iceland until 1 March.
