If you are planning on any travel or driving in North or North East Iceland, you might want to revise your plans. The IMO has issued a yellow weather alert for the regions, warning of snowfall with poor visibility and winter driving conditions on mountain roads, heaths and mountain passes. The Ring Road crosses several heaths and a part of the Central Highland plateau in the North East.
Winter driving conditions in N, NE
The weather warnings are in effect until two in the afternoon for the North East and four in the North Eastern coastal areas and the northern part of the Eastfjords. Moderate snowfall expected with poor visibility and deteriorating road conditions at higher altitudes. Sleet or rain at coastal areas.
The Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority has also warned of some snowfall or sleet on the Ring Road across Holtavörðuheiði heath, which separates West and North Iceland. Poor driving conditions, especially for vehicles not outfitted for winter travel.
Heavy rain in South East
ICE-SAR has also issued a travel advisory for South East Iceland, warning of strong winds and heavy rain
Strong winds are expected today (25.9.2018) in the south between Reykjavík and Höfn with heavy rain. Slow down and use caution!
Stay on Ring Road
With winter driving conditions travelers driving smaller vehicles without four wheel drive and winter tires should NOT attempt to drive mountain roads or take shortcuts like Öxi road 939 in East Iceland. Öxi shows up as a regular road on many online maps, but is not a full maintenance road, and can easily become impassable to smaller vehicles in winter. Accidents are common on Öxi when conditions deteriorate.
ICE-SAR has also issued a travel alert, warning people that F-roads in the Central Highlands are impassable due to snow.
ICE-SAR travel alert for Central Highlands
ICE-SAR has also issued a travel alert, asking travellers to revise their travel plans in the Central Highlands. Major roads are impassable, hiking and camping is not adviced. This also applies to Fimmvörðuháls trail:
Tuesday September 25: No hiking conditions on the Fimmvörduháls trail due to extreme winds, heavy precipitation and cold temperature.
Now that winter has arrived travelers should always keep up to date with weather alerts and the forecast on vedur.is, any travel warnings at safetravel.is and road conditions on the website of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Authority.
