The Reykjavík Metropolitan power utility ON has opened a charging station for electric cars at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. The station was opened to the public on Friday. The municipally owned utility plans to open nearly 30 new charging stations around the Ring Road in 2018.
The new charging station at Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon has two outlets for electric cars. One is a rapid charging outlet with three different kinds of sockets, while the other is a standard outlet which takes longer to complete a full charge.

The long distance between charging stations for electric cars along the ring road has been a major obstacle to the adoption of electric cars. This year the Reykjavík utility and the State Power Utility, along with municipalities and private companies, plan to add a number of new charging stations around the island. The plan is to make the entire Ring Road and all of Iceland outside wilderness areas or highalds accessible to electric cars.
The utility, ON or Orka Náttúrunnar operates the charging station. Orka Náttúrunnar is the leading geothermal power utility in Iceland. It operates Hellisheiði Power Plant, the third largest geothermal power plant in the world. Traditionally the utility has supplied the municipalities in the greater Reykjavík area and nearby towns with electricity and hot water. In recent years, however, the utility has been expanding into new markets, including charging stations for electric cars.
